-Notes: I’m very laid back when it comes to RP. I’m not too picky, because I feel it restricts not only the person your playing with, but yourself. I think it takes away from the play. Slash is lovee! Mark/Roger is my favorite slash pairing for RENT. As to what I play, I don’t have a preference. Slash is awesome. No slash is just as awesome. My favorite character is Mark Cohen. I just feel I connect with him more than any other character.

-Physical Appearance: The first thing that pulls from his quiet reserve, are those brilliant blue eyes. Those eyes that seemingly hold everything together. Pale features and soft, blonde hair contrast boldly against those blues, giving him something of an innocent demeanor. An ever thin form, from both malnutrition and quick metabolism, hides beneath an all-too-familiar sweater and a thick, woolen striped scarf. Though such an outfit can be rather…redundant, he feels more open, more secure. Its in such moments that he shines and offers that sweet smile, which, hides far more than one could possible imagine. Curling all 5 feet and 11 inches of himself over a work desk, he spends hours editing and piecing film together allowing him to lose thought of any sleep at all. Thus, the faint dark circles start in under his eyes, but this is not out of the ordinary. He’s a hard worker, after all.

+ PERSONALITY +

-General: Mark is the quiet boy in the back of the group. But, this does not stop him from doing anything. Although he tends to go unnoticed, he feverishly tries to keep his friends together through their sickness. Passionate about his film-making and about his friends, he often finds little time for himself. When he is angry and upset, he tends to explode, hacking away at every weakness the enemy might have. He makes his point clear and typically will not stand down from what he believes is right. He is also very emotional, though he might not show it. He fears for his friends, and has a great fear of being alone. Though, he does tend to have a sarcastic air to him when around closer friends. He has no trouble opening up and giving a laugh line or two. Besides, smiling is one of the best things you can do.

-Strengths: He’s very supportive and caring for his friends. They're all he has. He’s passionate and creative with both his work and his words. He’s sensitive but  often does not show it so that he can be strong for those around him. Mark tends to act selfless and willingly offers all of his talents to people, even those whom he feels unsure of.

-Weaknesses: Becomes too involved in his work, draws back away from everyone, does not take death well, inability to get his films to strive,

-Biggest vulnerability: The idea that most of his friends will go away eventually or die, leaving him alone with only the memories he has on film, to carry them with him forever. He’s very uneasy when he’s around any kind of drug use as well, considering his help for Roger during the guitarists rehab.

-Quirks: Mark often has small moments where he really cuts loose. He forgets his worry and just has fun with the moment. Though, its rare for him to do this. He also has a very quick, sarcastic tongue when he is within that close group of friends. Mark, whenever feeling upset, he will leave the loft and film, venting his emotions through his film.

-Biggest regret: (if there are any)

-Character's darkest secret: He is considering running off much like Roger did. He feels trapped and lost. He doesn't want to witness the loss of any more friends.

-If yes, did character tell them? Eventually. Mark practically locked himself away in his room, reviewing film over and over, taking in old memories. He spilled them to Angel one time when she had come over for a visit.

+ BACKGROUND +

Upon entering those teenaged years, Mark began to understand that he was different from most in his family. His father was greatly into sports and took every chance he could to try and get Mark into the latest football game or boxing match. Either way, he was highly uninterested. Yes, he would comply and humor his father at his mothers wishes, and would go to those pathetic basketball games. (Half the time, he would go to the bathroom for half the game and read, hidden away in a stall.) Instead of sports or other things of the like, he preferred books and technology. Because of this, he was often singled out and picked on.

His parents adored Cindy, and practically worshipped her. She was the best: got good grades, played sports, participated in all kinds of contests and clubs…Perfection. So, she was, naturally, in the spotlight. Gladly accepting the hidden role, he developed a new love for filming. Using a camera he borrowed, he created mini films with his action figures and whatnot. He didn't have to fight for their approval, he no longer really wanted it. When they did come to him, the attention they gave him was far too overwhelming. His mother was always checking in on him and  talking with him…he was being smothered.

Thus, when he finally was able to leave the house, he felt relieved and new. With what money his parents gave him and he earned from local jobs, he moved up to New York City and began to look for somewhere to stay in Alphabet City. Holiday Inn had become his best fried for a little while he attended college. Soon enough, a classmate, Benny, would offer him a room at his loft with a friend Collins, too. Graciously accepting this offer, he was able to gain two new friends. Not too long after, Roger came rolling in.

Roger made things quite interesting, considering he was yet another diverse addition to their crew. He and Roger had something in common, though. They were both “starving artists”, trying to find their place in the world. They grew close, but soon enough, April came into the picture, as did Maureen. It felt, to Mark, that they were losing touch with one another. They didn’t see one another around as much as they used to. Then, the note came. ‘We’ve Got Aids.” The first loss.

Mark helped Roger through the rehab process, but was aching inside. He hid his pain and grief, his sole focus landing on Roger’s recovery. Although, Roger was never the same. Maureen soon dumped him and they were back on that road they traveled before. Benny left, marrying some high-class woman named Allison. Collins left to teach at NYU, though showed up occasionally. Life was settling down…but not in a way he wished for it to. Everyone was leaving and finding themselves. He was stuck with the camera, no inspiration finding him at all.

Mark found his true inspiration when Collins returned with a wonderful man named Angel. Not too long after that, Mimi showed up at the window for Roger. Maureen found Joanne. Where did he fit in? As Angel began to weaken, he understood he was somewhat in the center of this tightly woven group. He tried so hard to keep everyone satisfied. Maureen and Joanne went through their little breakups, Mimi disappeared, and Benny was pushing for the Rent. Alexi at Buzzline, a job he hated dearly, continued calling him. He fell apart. Mimi returned and lived through a miracle, surely, and things settled down again. He couldn't help but wonder…where did he fit in?

+ ATTITUDE +

-Character's greatest fear: Losing his friends, having to move back to his parent’s home.

-How s/he feels about self: Mark is very self conscious. Mark tends to be very indifferent about himself and is constantly trying to figure out just who he is.

-If granted one wish, what would it be? To finally finish one film under his own influences.

-How character faces problems: Typically, he faces them head first, but for some, he will shy away and hope that it passes quietly.

-How do they deal with death? He does not deal well with it, though his exterior will beg to differ. He questions what he could’ve done to change it all, to prevent it. He often worries about others affected by it instead of himself.

-How do they feel about and deal with being in love? He doesn’t mind it at all. He likes the idea of having an extra shoulder there for him. He’s not one to let his thoughts out all the time, and Mark enjoys the idea of letting some of the weight off of his chest. Though, he is hesitant because of the relationship with Maureen.

-What is your favorite thing about the character you are applying for? I just love the character in general. I relate to him easily, so it helps me play him. I like how he can be so crazy, but then be the support beam for each of them within a few seconds.
